Heian-Series – Practice and Refine | Kata Academy

The Heian-Series of the Kata Academy includes all four Heian kata courses (Heian nidan through Heian godan) as a bundle – at a discounted price compared to purchasing each kata individually.
The kata "Heian shodan" is provided free of charge.

When you understand how your body really works – how power flows from the ground to the fist, how Kime works – you don't train harder, you train smarter and more precisely. That's genuine, holistic development instead of random training.

Each of the four online courses within the "Heian-Series" is displayed individually as its own course and includes the following modules for training and deepening your practice: the kata video from two different perspectives, biomechanics explanation, self-assessment checklist, fundamental principles, variations, analysis of common mistakes, interpretations and refinement, as well as the corresponding Enbusen card – all structured in one place.

With and by Fiore Tartaglia, 7th Dan, and 50+ years of intensively lived karate practice.

Product details

All four Heian kata (nidan through godan) are shown in full detail and supported by graphic elements. You get each video in three versions – slow from two perspectives, and fast – so you can see every movement precisely and follow the timing clearly. You'll learn the biomechanical principles: kinetic chains, hip rotation, body posture, and dynamics. You'll understand why common error patterns occur and how to correct them. With the 16-point checklists, you train with focus instead of at random – and see your first improvements in transitions and body awareness after 4 weeks.

Additional information

The Heian Series represents a didactic progression within Shōtōkan karate: it begins with the linear foundation of Heian shodan (provided free of charge), moves through the more complex biomechanics of Heian nidan, and arrives at the lateral, close-combat dimension of Heian sandan. With Heian yondan, the rigid framework is broken open through flowing combinations and open-hand techniques. Heian godan finally carries the series through rhythm changes, deep stances, and its characteristic jump to reach its athletic and tactical culmination.

The key to improvement lies in continuous, small steps. In Japanese: Kaizen (改善) – Kai (改) change, Zen (善) good.
The checklists help you do exactly that: a small improvement every day – in a movement, a moment of tension, a hip rotation. Over time: a fundamental shift in your quality. That's the difference between "training" and "developing."

Time investment: 1–2 hours per week per kata, plus regular dojo training. After 4 weeks: first improvements (more precise transitions, better body awareness). After 8–12 weeks: noticeable progression (visibly improved technical understanding and movement quality).
