Heian yondan – Practice and Refine | Kata Academy

Heian yondan plays a key role within the Heian series. In most associations, it marks the transition from the lower kyu grades (white to green belt) to the upper kyu grades (blue to brown belt). While the first three kata consolidate the foundation and the basic techniques as well as close-range combat, Heian yondan raises karate to a new level of dynamics, athleticism and rhythm.

When you understand how your body truly works – how power flows from the ground to the fist, how kime functions – you don't train harder, but smarter and more precisely. That is real, holistic development instead of random training.

This online course, part of the FT-KARATE Kata Academy, includes the following modules for practice and refinement: the kata video from two different perspectives, a biomechanics explanation, a self-assessment checklist, fundamental principles, variations, an analysis of the most common mistakes, interpretations and in-depth study, as well as the accompanying enbusen chart – all structured in one place.

With and by Fiore Tartaglia, 7th Dan, and 50+ years of intensively lived karate practice.

Product details

Heian yondan is shown in full detail and supported by graphic elements. You receive the video in three versions – slow from two perspectives and fast – so you can see every movement precisely and follow the timing clearly. You learn the biomechanical principles: chained movements, hip rotation, body postures and dynamics. You understand why common error patterns arise and how to correct them. With the 16-point checklist, you train with focus rather than at random – and after 4 weeks you see the first improvements in your transitions and your body awareness.

Additional information

Heian yondan contains further aspects that go beyond the first three kata. It establishes the principle of flowing movement, introduces complex combinations and trains the interception and redirection of an opponent's attacks using open-hand techniques. It thus forms the bridge from pure basic training to the athletic and tactical free-fighting concept.

The key to improvement lies in continuous, small steps. In Japanese: Kaizen (改善) – Kai (改) change, Zen (善) good.

With the checklist, you achieve exactly that: every day a small improvement to one movement, one tension, one hip rotation. Over time: a fundamental shift in your quality. That is the difference between "training" and "developing".

Time investment: 1–2 hours per week plus regular dojo training. After 4 weeks: first improvements (more precise transitions, better body awareness). After 8–12 weeks: clear progression (technical understanding and movement quality visibly improved).
