Whether you're just coming from my email about the Kata Academy or this is your first time here: what I'm telling you here is important to me, and I want to share it with you as personally as possible.
I, Fiore, have been practicing karate since I was 16. That's over 50 years now; at 68, I still start my day with my very own personal karate training, even before I have breakfast or do anything else. But continuity alone was never enough for me. I quickly realized what a difference it makes – for the body and for the mind – if you never stop questioning yourself, and if you directly incorporate what you've just understood into your own training. It's about going deep and truly wanting to understand, rather than "just" training.
Years of training, countless books, courses I have attended and given myself, the constant exchange with karateka in my dojo and at my retreats – all of this has shown me one thing: I know why karateka repeatedly hit their limits and sometimes just feel frustrated. And I aim to pass on my knowledge and my way of thinking and living karate in the most practical and understandable way possible.
Why I build the Kata Academy the way I do
I love details. I love structure. In the Kata Academy, I bring both together: a systematically structured format where all relevant and valuable information about a kata is combined and organized into clear modules.
This distinguishes the Academy from what you usually find online. A video shows you what a technique looks like – the what. What you often lack is the why and the how. That's exactly where the Academy comes in. And one advantage: you don't have to painstakingly search everything out yourself – instead, you'll find it all in one place, available to you for life, to revisit again and again and let it work on you and your karate.
My goal is for all karateka – regardless of their level – to truly learn to understand. Not because understanding is an end in itself, but because it leads to development: in one's own karate and beyond.
The connection between understanding and mindfulness
If I understand my kata more deeply – everything behind the techniques and movements – then I practice karate with mindfulness and awareness. And then I can truly change something within myself, both physically and mentally.
This is the core of what I want to pass on in all my training sessions, and now with the Academy as well: not just technique, but an approach to your karate that lets you be fully present and helps you 'grow.' When I practice or teach karate, that's all I do. My focus is there and nowhere else. That has immense value – and I wish that for every one of you.
This applies to the beginner learning their first kata, as well as to the Dan-holder who has been practicing a movement for years and suddenly realises that they haven't fully understood it yet or repeatedly encounters the same obstacles or mistakes. It applies to the re-entrant returning after a break, and to the Sensei or trainer who wants to systematically pass on their own knowledge to others.
A beginning, not an end
What goes online in July 2026 with Heian shodan to Heian godan is just the beginning. My goal is to prepare all 26 Shotokan kata in this format and even more. Stay tuned. The fact that I can offer this digitally means reaching karateka all over the world – and that particularly pleases and honors me.
If you're ready to dig deeper and put your kata and thus your karate on a new foundation – check out the Kata Academy. It's starting soon. I look forward to accompanying you on your journey.
By the way: I'm offering Heian shodan for free – so you can calmly get an idea of the Academy's structure.
Osu, Fiore
