The name of this stance— "Hourglass Stance" —comes from the stride. The combination of the very short length and the usual stride sequence (feet are brought together in the middle of the stride) is reminiscent of the shape of an hourglass. Sanchin dachi is the short form of Hangetsu dachi and is also the shortest basic stance.
