JUJI UKE

Jūji uke is suitable for the jōdan and gedan ranges. It can be performed with either closed or open hands (kaishu). This X-shaped defensive technique was designed as a way to immobilize the attacking arm or leg. In the open-handed version, after the block, the attacking forearm is held and rotated to restrict the opponent's movements or force them into an awkward position. Jūji uke appears in both basic and advanced kata. In the basic kata, the technique can be seen in Heian yondan and godan. In Heian godan, it appears in both versions: with closed or open hands.
