The defense technique with the outside hand edge is another technique that, like Uchi Uke, defends against Chūdan attacks to the outside, while keeping the hands open (Kaishō stance).
In Shōtōkan, shutō uke is usually combined with the kokutsu-dachi stance. Occasionally, the technique is also used from neko ashi dachi.
Shutō uke is very common in kata. It first appeared in Heian shodan. The straight-arm version, Tate shutō uke, also appears in the master kata with the Kiba dachi and Fudō dachi stances.
